@GF - it has nothing to do with not being able to afford getting our oil changed and everything to do with the knowledge of how to take care of things ourselves and keep that money for other stuff if we so choose. Not *having* to pay someone else to do it for us provides options. We can choose what we do ourselves and what we hire someone else to do for us - instead of having to pay someone else because we're clueless. And at least by teaching our children these things - they'll grow up and be able to make the same choices. Whether it's ability to cook well, sew, build a house or fix a car or any number of things. We find value in the lessons of doing it yourself - for the satisfaction that comes from it and the ability to save money too. Thanks for your input.

@BTW - I agree the sense of accomplishment is worth it and you got my point about being able to choose. And I agree about the sexy when doing manly things :) Thanks!

I can't wait for the my husband to start teaching our son (if I had a daughter I'd want her to know how, too!) how to do these types of things. I hope my son feels the same sense of accomplishment that my husband does when he can fix or build something. And I want him to be able to choose whether he does a job or pays someone else to do it.

As an aside, I find my husband particularly sexy when he's doing these very manly things.

Vavoom!

What's great about your husband is that he must really ENJOY doing that kind of work - fixing cars and remodeling houses. The feeling of accomplishment is worth the dirty hands and long hours. That's terrific.

My husband, on the other hand, has zero interest in such things. I'm pretty sure if we were ever in a financial situation that we couldn't afford to pay to get our oil changed - we'd figure out how to do it. Likewise, we'll never go in debt to remodel our house. We wail till we have the money saved up to do it. And then we'll pay someone do it for us (which provides a job too).

You've shared some terrific lessons to pass on to your kids - terrific because they come from the heart and reflect your passions and values.
